101 Ways to Elevate – #19 Don’t Do Cards

Number nineteen: Don't Do Cards

Good day, I'm Troy Dean from Video User Manuals and Agency Mavericks and this is the 101 Ways to Elevate Yourself and Demand Higher Fees, a practical guide for WordPress consultants to start attracting better quality clients, work on better, more interesting projects, and get paid better fees. Now, let's go elevate.

Number 19, don't do business cards. What? I can't believe it. Don't do business cards? Are you insane? No, I'm not insane. Don't do business cards. Busy people don't need business cards. I don't do, I haven't done business cards for, I don't know, the last two or three years. I don't need business cards, I never give business cards to anyone. No one follows you up from a business card. It's a very polite thing to do at networking functions. I accept business cards, I collect business cards, but I don't have a business card and I don't give business cards out. I collect business cards, and then I drop people into my e-mail or I respond to Funnel, and I nurture them and keep in touch that way if I think we're a good fit. I'm too busy to do business cards. I don't need to give business cards out.

The other reason I like to not do business cards is because everyone does business cards and, really, it's a bit of a competition when you give your business card out and everyone, especially when you're in the design space, everyone looks at it and sizes it up and says, “Oh, look at your business card. It's on this nice 300gsm shiny stock and it's using these nice, pantone spot colors and we love a bit of that, don't we?” Frankly, I think it's all a bit of a [whistles]. So, I don't do business cards, I don't think you should do business cards, you are too busy to do business cards, you don't need them.

Instead, collect other people's business cards, so that you can follow them up on your terms and in your system. And in the next episode, I'm going to tell you why you should leave your smartphone on during a client meeting. Until then, elevate.
